Why We Love Les Gets

Les Gets was where Ski Famille was born over 25 years ago. When we started looking for the perfect base for families it stood out as pretty, accessible and thoroughly family friendly. The skiing wasn’t bad either!

The years have passed, the chalets we operate have changed and other resorts have been added to our programme. We still love Les Gets though. This is our rundown of why we think it should still make the shortlist for your next family ski holiday.

Les Gets Location

Les Gets is 2 hours 15 minutes (approx) from Lyon airport, meaning you can leave the UK in the morning and be relaxing in the resort by lunchtime.

The village itself is compact with everything within a short radius from the town centre and lifts. All Ski Famille chalets are no more than a 5 minute walk to the piste (some are much closer!), and three (Le Marjorie, Bogart and Bacall) are in the central part of the village.

Stunning views and fresh snow in Les Gets

Les Gets is part of the Portes du Soleil ski region. The Portes du Soleil claims to be the largest interlinked ski area in the world and Les Gets offers links to no less than 14 other ski resorts. The area as a whole boasts 209 lifts, 288 marked slopes, and over 650+ kilometres of piste. You can ski to Switzerland for lunch and be back in your chalet in time for tea.

The reality for many of our guests is that they don’t stray far from the Les Gets local ski area. You’ll enjoy pretty tree lined slopes, a wide variety of green, blue red and black pistes and some fabulous mountain restaurants for a hot chocolate stop or hearty lunch. Many families return year after year and never tire of the chocolate box scenery and friendly atmosphere.

One of of favourite areas to ski is Mont-Chéry. Mont-Chéry is largely made up of red and black runs and, when conditions are right, there is some fabulous and easily accessible off piste on ChéryNord. You can take in stunning views across to Mont Blanc from the terraces of both the Belvedere and Grand Ourse restaurants on the south facing side of the mountain.

Learning to Ski in Les Gets

Les Gets remains the perfect base for first-time skiers. The beginner areas are wide, open and have great facilities including “magic carpet” lifts for the real novices and gentle tow lifts for those beginning to find their feet.

We work with the 360 International ski school in Les Gets. Their friendly team have worked with us for well over ten years and have good spoken English and a genuine enthusiasm for helping both children and adults get the most from the mountains. 360 lessons for children are included in our morning childcare packages.

Food and Drink in Les Gets

This area of the Alps is something of a foodie haven. There is a definite focus on cheese, potato and ham based products (!) but there is plenty of variety including seafood specialities and piste side barbeques. Our chalet team will always be happy to give you tips on where the best lunch stops are on the mountain … remember to leave room for your three-course dinner though.

In terms of nightlife Les Gets isn’t really a dedicated party resort. The family focus means that the most common form of apres ski is curling up in front of the chalet fire with a cuppa or glass of fizz. That said there are plenty of friendly bars and, for those determined to dance the night away, the Igloo Chalet Club. Originally opened in 1938 “L’Igloo” is one of the oldest nightclubs in France; the playlist has evolved a bit, the decor less so!

Happy Family

Nothing beats lunch up the mountain!

Christmas in Les Gets

Can we let you into a secret? Father Christmas actually lives in Les Gets. Christmas is a big deal in Les Gets; children can visit Santa and his elves at his workshop in the woods. This is a truly magical encounter that definitely rivals that of the impersonators hanging around in Lapland; Les Gets Santa is the real deal. Probably …  Find out more about Christmas in Les Gets

Events

Les Gets Tourist Office organises events throughout the season. Two of the most notable are “Ski Colour” and “Rock the Pistes”.

Ski Colour

Dressed in white overalls, participants follow a fun-packed trail on Mont-Chéry, crossing explosions of multicoloured powder. The goal is to cross the finish-line looking as colourful as possible! Find out more about Ski Colour

Rock the Pistes

Concerts on the mountain and in the village throughout the third week in March. Visit the Rock the Pistes Website

“Great for a beginner like me but also good for more experienced skiers in my party.” Khan Family, Chats Bleus, February 2017.

This was our first time in Les Gets – we loved the village and felt it was very easy to move around with children and we loved the close proximity to everything from our chalet.” Bridgeman Jones Family, Le Marjorie, April 2017

We enjoyed Les Gets and would like to go back … loved how family friendly it all was, with short airport transport times.”  Reynolds-Jones Family, Le Marjorie, February 2017

Les Gets is about as good a family resort as I have been to. The ski school used by Ski Famille was great, nice sized classes – big enough for company for the children but still small enough to provide very good tuition.”  Adams Family, January 2017, Grand Mouflon.

We loved the resort and found that it was a great family resort.” Mackay Family, January 2016, Chats Blues

Loved the fact that there were runs especially for children. They have already asked to come back as their first skiing holiday has been so fabulous.” Scrimgeour Family, February 2016, Grand Mouflon

Les Gets is a great family resort. We love that we could ski in and ski out, pretty much to the door.”  Dorbin Family, April 2016, Petit Mouflon

We chose les Gets for the family friendly nature of the resort, plus we had some beginners in our group and it’s very good in this regard. It’s great to be able to ski over to Avoriaz for those more experienced.” White Family, April 2015, Chats Bleus

Pistes excellent, great variety. Some of the prettiest. VERY good for children and for this reason would definitely come back to Les Gets.” Williams Family, March 2015, Chats Blues

A delightful friendly resort with lots of varied skiing to be done in the Portes de Soleil. We particularly enjoyed visiting Switzerland which can be done using only blue runs!!!!!” Shaw Family, March 2015, Le Marjorie

We love Les Gets, great resort!” Walker Family, March 2015, Bacall

I am not a skier but my children and grandchildren all had a wonderful time. I think it is an ideal resort for families.” McCutcheon Family, February 2015, Bogart

Les Gets is just brilliant. Never any queues, plenty of skiing and perfect for families.” Smith Family, April 2014, Petit Mouflon

Love Les Gets, it was our first visit there and most definitely will be back! It was just big enough, without getting too commercial and had a great range of pistes for us all. (I’m trying to swing another trip before the season ends this year!!)Burd Family, February 2014, Grand Mouflon

We return to Les Gets because there is something for everyone, and that includes non-skiers. The children have always loved the ski terrain because accessibility is great, with the magic carpet at the top of the Chavannes for the complete beginners. Now that they ski better than me (!), they have the entire piste map at their disposal which keeps them busy. Restaurants and cafes on the mountain are copious and friendly.” Li-Fox Family, February 2014, Chats Bleus

I can’t recommend Les Gets enough for families. Ski Famille have picked the perfect resort.”  Williams Family, January 2014, Bogart
